Why You Should Have The Difficult Conversation

What happens when we don't have the conversations we need to have? For example, maybe I have someone on my team whose performance isn't where it should be, and I should say something. How does it impact that person when I don't have the conversation? Well, number one, they're kept in the dark. They don't think they're doing anything wrong and they keep doing what they've been doing, and then it impacts my team, right? They might follow that person's lead. Morale goes down the tubes.

People on my team might leave, and you know what? It impacts me too. It impacts my reputation as a leader. I start feeling that feeling called resentment where I'm like, "How does that person not see what they're doing?" Resentment is just an unhelpful emotion. Nothing happens to the other person because I feel that way. Remember this, when you don't have the conversations you need to have, nothing changes, or usually, situations get worse. When you're tempted to avoid, it might feel good in the short term to put that conversation off, but in the long term, it leads to disaster. Have the conversations you need to have.
